Lobster Golf Balls?
The University of Maine has come up with a cheap, biodegradable golf ball made from lobster shells. Green friendly because it can biodegrade in two weeks and not pollute the sea for those Cruiseship Golfers. It’s also super cheap, about 19 cents compared to $1 for other biodegradable golf balls. When it comes to “Green” alternatives that use animal byproducts, what are your thoughts? Would you buy the Lobster alternative?

Organic and Natural skincare- Is it really worth it?

Why Go Natural?

Why Organic and Natural Products?

We already know that eating natural and organic food is healthier for us and keeps toxic chemicals like pesticides out of our bodies. What we may not know however, is that toxins are sometimes more lethal when entered through the skin, because they go directly into our bloodstream. The skin is the largest organ in our body, and absorbs 64% of what we put on it. Cleansers, masks, creams, lotions, soaps, shampoos, are all things we use daily, sometimes several times a day. What is even more concerning is that cosmetics and skin care products do not go under the same rigorous testing as food and prescription drugs, and often times contain ingredients that not only may cause the skin to have a dependency on chemicals, long term irritations and sensitivity and increased problems, but are also harmful for our bodies and may lead to serious health risks.

Organic Vs. Natural

Which is better? This is a difficult question to answer. In general, organic products are considered better because of a higher potency of vitamins and minerals in organic ingredients versus ingredients grown with pesticides and other chemicals. Unlike natural products, ingredients in an organic product must be certified by a third party, thereby guaranteeing that there were no synthetic pesticides, synthetic chemicals and genetically modified organisms used in the process. Whether organic or natural however the most important thing is that the product does not contain any harmful chemicals. Many organically labeled products only have a few of their ingredients certified organic, but still contain harmful synthetic chemicals. Since there are currently no government regulated authorities in North America or the EU that certify organic or natural cosmetic products, it is important to look to private third party certifications in addition to the actual ingredients of a product.

Kaia House recognizes the following private third party International Organic Certifications:
Eco-Cert (France)
BDIH (Germany)
Soil Association of the UK (United Kingdom)
USDA approved Organic Certification Agencies (United States)

How to Cleanse away your ACNE

We get alot of questions about what to do with toners, scrubs and moisturizers when you have acne skin. We admit, it can get really really confusing! So we’re putting up some quick tips that will help close up those pores, and treat stubborn acne for good!

STEP 1: KNOW HOW TO CLEANSE!

There are many instructions out there that can mumble up the cleansing routine. For acne skin, the whole purpose is to clean, close up pores and then moisturize. So the order is:

1.) CLEAN

2.) TONE

3.) MOISTURIZE

STEP 2: SCRUB AWAY!

If you have small bumps or pimples or are starting to see fine lines, you NEED a scrub! The more bumps you have, the stronger or more abrasive the scrub should be. When you decide, follow this order:

1.) SCRUB (opens up the pores)

2.) CLEAN (cleans out the opened pores)

3.) TONE (closes up the pores)

4.) MOISTURIZE (protects and treats skin after it’s been cleansed)

STEP 3: ICE ICE BABY

During winter months, skin also tends to dry up. If you find your ACNE/OILY skin getting dryer but not dry enough for a more moisturizing cleanser then consider the below options:

1.) KEEP your cleanser for acne skin, but switch over to a normal/balanced moisturizer like our Hibiscus Moisturizer and our balanced skin Sea Minerals Toner.

2.) Cleanse ONLY at night as opposed to the Morning as well as Nighttime.

Another special tip for those that get frequent ACNE or live in big polluted cities… USE ICE!

After you treat your skin with our inflammation reducing Green Tea Moisturizer, ICE your face by wrapping an ice cube in a napkin and gently glide it over your face. This will close up your pores right away and entrap the healing moisturizer in your skin.

When Life gives you Lemons…
It’s tough out there these days. The weather is unpredictable, the economy is depressed, and well there is only so much Kardashian gossip we can keep up with before we feel down in the dumps. But as they say, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. And that’s what we’re trying to do here at Kaia House. Instead of booking $100 spa appointments that drain our pockets and our souls, we are opting for the privacy of our own homes with our new Lemon and Shea Body Scrub kit. Soft, Subtle, Lemony… we love it already. Paired with our Shea Butter Soap, we are left with uber soft skin, and (whether you believe in Aromatherapy or not) happier spirits.
